The Mark Ridley-Thomas for City Council, District 10 Campaign officially kicked into high gear this weekend, with a Zoom rally attended by over 300 allies, supporters, friends and volunteers.
Hosted by KJLH radio star Dominique DiPrima, the #MRTforCD10 event was part rally, part entertainment, part call to action and a whole lot of fun.
The times, no doubt are challenging, and the challenges facing District 10 and greater Los Angeles are mounting: COVID-19 is damaging the health and the livelihoods of thousands; the crisis of homelessness and affordable housing continues; wildfires are requiring extraordinary resources from the entire state, and even the ability to vote by mail is under attack.
So why was the event fun? Because it was filled with enthusiasm and determination. We’re not giving in and we’re not giving up.
Speakers from all walks of life and neighborhoods throughout the 10th District expressed confidence that with effective, experienced leadership, we can right the ship.
The moment may be trying, but as U.S. Rep. Karen Bass emphasized, MRT is the man for the moment.
“I used to say vote as if your life depended on it, and now I say this election is about life and death. And while we all obsess on what’s happening at the national level, we have a number of issues here, right here in Los Angeles City. And I can’t think of a better person to lead the 10th District than Mark Ridley-Thomas” she said, specifically calling out his work on civil rights, social and economic justice.
MRT thanked the speakers, participants and organized labor for their support, then he called on their help with the work.
“We stand in the gap on the question of homelessness. We push for law enforcement reform and accountability. We stand for economic recovery and an equitable distribution of the resources that define our very lives. We stand for the environment being better, and finally, we will not relent until we deal with this issue of COVID-19.”
And after the event, dozens did indeed stay to phone bank CD10 voters.
“I need you to stand with me and take nothing for granted,” MRT said to the audience.
Because the times demand nothing less.
